About AICAR
AICAR is 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside, a purine nucleoside analogue rather than a peptide. After entering cells through nucleoside transporters it is phosphorylated by adenosine kinase to ZMP (AICA ribotide), which mimics AMP.
ZMP activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), the cellular energy sensor that regulates glucose uptake, fatty-acid oxidation and mitochondrial biogenesis. AICAR has been a standard pharmacological AMPK activator in laboratory research for decades.

AICAR is used in cell and animal studies of energy sensing, skeletal-muscle metabolism, hepatic lipid metabolism and mitochondrial adaptation. Because ZMP also affects other AMP-sensitive enzymes, studies often pair AICAR with genetic or alternative pharmacological approaches to confirm that an effect depends on AMPK.
