About SS-31 (Elamipretide)
SS-31 belongs to the Szeto-Schiller family of peptides, named after Hazel Szeto and Peter Schiller. Its sequence, D-Arg-2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine-Lys-Phe-NH₂, alternates aromatic and basic residues, which lets it cross cell membranes and concentrate in mitochondria despite its positive charge.
Inside mitochondria it associates with cardiolipin, a phospholipid of the inner membrane that supports the organization of the electron transport chain. Its international nonproprietary name is elamipretide.
