DSIP is a nonapeptide, Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu, isolated by Schoenenberger and Monnier from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits in which slow-wave (delta) sleep had been induced by electrical stimulation. It was named for its reported ability to promote delta-wave sleep when transferred to other animals.
No dedicated gene or specific receptor for DSIP has been conclusively identified, and its physiological role is still debated.
