About Oxytocin
Oxytocin is a nonapeptide, Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly-NH₂, with a disulfide bond between its two cysteines that forms a six-residue ring. It is made in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. In 1953 it became the first peptide hormone to be synthesized, work by Vincent du Vigneaud that was recognized with the 1955 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
It differs from vasopressin at only two positions, and the two hormones show some cross-reactivity at each other's receptors.
