About Glutathione
Glutathione is an unusual tripeptide: its glutamate is linked to cysteine through the side-chain (γ) carboxyl group instead of the usual α-peptide bond, which protects it from most peptidases. The cysteine thiol is the reactive center.
Cells keep glutathione mostly in its reduced form (GSH); oxidation produces glutathione disulfide (GSSG), and the GSH/GSSG ratio is a standard readout of cellular redox state. It is synthesized in two ATP-dependent steps by glutamate–cysteine ligase and glutathione synthetase.

Glutathione is used in research on oxidative stress, detoxification by glutathione S-transferases, redox signaling and ferroptosis through glutathione peroxidase 4, and as a reagent in biochemical and cell-culture work.
