About KPV
KPV consists of three amino acids, lysine, proline and valine, corresponding to positions 11–13 at the C-terminus of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). The full 13-residue hormone acts on melanocortin receptors; the tripeptide was investigated because it appeared to retain part of the hormone's activity in inflammation models.
Because it is so small, KPV can enter cells directly, including through the peptide transporter PepT1 in intestinal epithelium.
Research context
KPV is used in cell and animal models of intestinal and skin inflammation to study NF-κB and MAPK signaling. It is also one of the four components of the KLOW blend.
